Don't talk about it, be about it

Mos Def performed Dollar Day in New Orleans at the Paramount last weekend as part of Dave Chappelle's Block Party tour. It's a song about the effect of Hurricane Katrina and the Bush administration's fumbling response to it. Mos Def expressed his sympathy for the victims of the hurricane and encouraged everyone in the audience to donate even just $1 to the relief effort.

Cool. Where in the theater are they collecting donations? Hmmm, no mention of that.

Well, collecting paper money does present some logistical challenges. At least Mos & Co. donated portions of the ticket sales to a reputable charity, right? Nope, no mention of that either.

Thankfully, at least he didn't promote his upcoming album during the performance at all. Oh wait... Yeah, numerous mentions of that, replete with "I don't promote on TV b/c TV doesn't give you the story straight."

OK, let me make sure I get this straight, Mos. You have no problem invoking Hurricane Katrina to get the audience on your side, but when it comes to donating $1 out of the $66 that each of 1500 people paid to sit in the balcony at your sold-out show, that's where you draw the line?

Got it.

Thass it and thass all

A lesser person would take this opportunity to chide his some of his friends and remind them that the closest they get to the drivers seat of a car is when they're sitting on the right side of the bus while its in the left lane.

Not yours truly. I let others do the talking for me.

Raja Bell, MBA

"I understand they're making it out to make us look better to corporate and big business. But we don't really sell to big business. We sell to kids and people who are into the NBA hip-hop world."
--Raja Bell, Phoenix Suns guard

Right you are, Raja. Kids are the ones buying season tickets and luxury suites. And the checks for advertisements and sponsorships? All signed by people who are into the NBA hip-hop world.

Spot on.

Paul Shirley

I used to think that having a "Who is Mike Jones" jersey was high comedy, but the next time I overpay to wear someone else's name, it's gotta be Paul Shirley, from the Phoenix Suns. After the last two rec league bball seasons, I've slowly accepted that I might be a full 2 years away from playing like Lebron, but booooyy I could put up some Paul Shirley numbers like no other! Astonishingly, he plays approximately 200 seconds per game, give or take 2 seconds. He's gonna be a beast in the playoffs though!

Anyhow, Paul Shirley, true whiteboy geek that he is (who else in the NBA has an engineering degree?), has a blog. (I, for one, remain cordially unimpressed by the fact that he has posted to his blog more in the past week than I have in the past 2 months.) It's not bad reading though. Nowhere else on NBA.com can you find the honest-to-God truth about the Atlanta Hawks.

Saying the Hawks are a bad basketball team is like saying that living in Beirut would be exciting—true, but not really the whole story.

See, now I need a Hawks jersey for my summer trip to Lebanon.

Pledge abstinence, get more sex?

The latest study, published in the April issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health, found that teens pledging virginity until marriage are more likely to have oral and anal sex than other teens who have not had intercourse.
